For over twenty-five years, it has strived to improve the visual and perceptual image of the community in order to draw in new, unique businesses, enhance opportunities for existing businesses, create a resident-friendly neighborhood and attract visitors.
The mission of the WPP is to promote economic development and community revitalization in The Village by encouraging residents, organizations and businesses to work together toward common goals. To foster such a community, the WPP provides a wide variety of services and resources, including housing and commercial development, Mainstreets Pittsburgh programming, site location assistance and community planning.
The results speak for themselves. In recent years, the WPP has brought more than 35 new businesses to The Village. This resulted in the creation of more than 150 jobs and private investment exceeding $11 million.
The WPP was also influential in the 2003 renovation of the West End-Elliot Overlook to the tune of $2.1 million, as well as the West End Circle Reconfiguration Project, a PennDOT-executed plan that cost $52.6 million. The WPP worked closely with PennDOT contractors to minimize impact, provide detour alerts and forge new pedestrian and bicycle linkages between The Village, riverfront and Rails-to-Trails.
